Frequently Asked

Everything you need to know about The Burning Thread — our mission, process, and impact.

General

The Burning Thread is a sustainability-focused initiative that transforms cigarette butt waste into usable fibers and materials. We collect discarded cigarette filters — made of cellulose acetate — and process them through an innovative method to create something valuable from what the world throws away.

Cigarette butts are the most littered item on the planet. Over 4.5 trillion are discarded every year. They contain toxic chemicals and microplastics that leach into soil and water. Despite being everywhere, almost no one was trying to solve this problem — so we decided to.

The project began as a college experiment — driven by curiosity and the intent to solve a real-world environmental problem. After months of research, trials, and failures, we discovered that cellulose acetate from cigarette filters could be processed into usable materials. The project later received support under the SSIP (Student Startup and Innovation Policy), which helped it evolve from an idea into a structured startup.

Process

We work with multiple channels for collection:

  • Partner restaurants, cafés, and public spaces where collection bins are placed
  • Community clean-up drives and awareness campaigns
  • Direct partnerships with local housekeeping and waste management teams
  • Individual contributors who collect and send butts to us

The collected cigarette butts go through a multi-step process:

  • Sorting & Cleaning — Removing tobacco residue, paper, and ash
  • Chemical Treatment — Breaking down toxins and sanitizing the filters
  • Processing — Converting cellulose acetate into usable fiber form
  • Product Development — Turning the processed material into final products

Each step is carefully designed to ensure safety, quality, and environmental responsibility.

Yes. The processing method completely neutralizes toxins and removes harmful chemicals from the original cigarette filters. The cellulose acetate is thoroughly cleaned, treated, and tested before being converted into any product. Safety and quality are our top priorities at every stage.

It’s more transformation than either. Traditional recycling breaks material down and re-forms it. Upcycling increases value without full processing. What we do takes a toxic, discarded material and fundamentally changes its nature into something clean, useful, and entirely new. It’s not just recycling — it’s reinvention.

Impact

We are currently developing a range of products from processed cigarette filter fibers. These include textile materials, composite boards, and other sustainable material applications. Our product line is expanding as we continue to innovate and improve our process.

We are in our early stages and actively scaling. Every batch we process represents waste that would have otherwise sat in landfills or washed into waterways for 10+ years. As we grow our collection network and processing capacity, our impact multiplies significantly.

Cigarette butts cause serious environmental damage:

  • They leach toxic chemicals (arsenic, lead, nicotine) into soil and groundwater
  • They release microplastics as cellulose acetate slowly breaks down
  • They take 10+ years to decompose
  • They harm marine life when they reach oceans and rivers
  • They are the #1 item found in beach cleanups worldwide

By intercepting and transforming this waste, we prevent all of the above — and create something useful in return.
